I know exactly what it’s like to feel lost in your own work. In art school, while my peers confidently put together their portfolios, I was struggling. I kept bouncing between styles, trying to mimic the artists I admired, but nothing felt like me. My work wasn’t cohesive, and I had no idea what to do about it!
I’d been painting since my teens, and everyone around me saw me as the “artist.” But deep down, I wasn’t making the art that reflected who I truly was. Instead, I was creating to please others, hoping that if I just did a really good job technically, that would suffice.
For years, I tried everything to figure out who I was as an artist—taking personality tests, filling journals, and seeking help from therapists and mentors, hoping they could help me find the answers.
It wasn’t until after 2020, and finally having time and space to reflect, that I created a pivotal piece in my art trajectory — Familiar, a piece that wasn’t perfect, but it felt like me. For the first time, I allowed myself to paint from my intuition, with vulnerability, rather than trying to make everything flawless.
That was the turning point. It wasn’t about achieving perfection—it was about trust.
Since that breakthrough moment, I’ve continued developing that trust, alongside my many other personal experiments, to draw out the best of the best in my art practice. I’ve been on a journey of digging deeper into authenticity, refining a methodology that helps uncover my true voice—something that that goes way beyond technique.
